*held another successful meeting on Wednesday, February 20 in the Mesquite Room of the UC and organized more events!

Dr. Miriam Grossman to Speak at Trinity University

The Young Conservatives of Texas at UTSA are teaming up with the College Republicans at Trinity University to host a special lecture by Dr. Miriam Grossman.

Miriam Grossman, M.D., is the author of Unprotected: A Campus Psychiatrist Reveals How Political Correctness Endangers Every Student, published in November 2006 by Sentinel (Penguin).

She is a Senior Fellow at the Clare Boothe Luce Policy Institute, a non-profit organization that strives to advance America’s women.

Unprotected draws on Dr. Grossman’s 10 years’ experience as a staff psychiatrist at UCLA Student Psychological Services. She has been interviewed on over 100 radio shows, Fox News, and 700 Club, and her book received positive reviews in The Wall Street Journal, National Review, The Weekly Standard, The American Spectator, Townhall.com, NewsMax.com, and elsewhere. Dr. Grossman currently contributes commentary for Cybercast News Service.

Grossman’s lecture will cover how political correctness at campus health centers promotes false information about safe sex practices.  She will be available for questions and photos.

Grossman has heard about the UTSA porn club controversy, and it’s likely the topic will be addressed.

Minuteman Leader Greeted With Protest At UTSA

By Christian Bove The head of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corp was in San Antonio on Monday to speak to students at UTSA about illegal immigration. Chris Simcox says his focus was how to help the undocumented youths in our country gain legal citizenship. But, much like last semester when Simcox spoke on campus, there were several students who didn’t want to hear his message. Luis Felix was one of about half a dozen students who was escorted by police out of the auditorium shortly after the speech started after they began chants of “racist, facist, go away…Minuteman, Nazi, K-K-K.”

By Christian Bove A student group at UTSA is inviting a controversial speaker to campus today but a near riot broke out the last time he was in town. The Young Conservatives of Texas have invited the president and founder of the Minutemen Civil Defense Corp to speak at 2:00 today at the Retama Auditorium on campus. Kyle Winkler, Executive Cirector of the YCT at UTSA, says they are taking precautions this time around to make sure things don’t get out of hand like last semester. The Minutemen pride themselves on helping protect America’s borders, but critics of the group view them as racist vigilantes. Police were called out last semester when Chris Simcox spoke, but no arrests were made.

Vote NO on Prop 15

As federal support for medical advances and breakthroughs dwindles, the Texas legislature looks at making its own contribution through the passing of Proposition 15. The proposition, heavily supported by the Lance Armstrong Foundation, calls for $3 billion in bonds for cancer research.

Educating students about the debt Proposition 15 would incur for Texans was not the only reason the Young Conservatives of Texas (YCT) spent two hours in the UC answering questions on Oct. 17. The legislation of Proposition 15 states that 15 percent of the money would go to projects other than those dedicated to cancer research such as cancer prevention campaigns and the construction of facilities, both of which indirectly help fund a cure.

Despite legislations’ benevolent intentions, some question whether the state can afford $3 billion of debt, and whether the Texas legislature should get involved in medical research.

“When the government gets involved, it creates a bureaucracy, which usually ends up either wasting tax dollars or creating a big mess, rather than actually having a cure for cancer,” said Young Conservatives of Texas (YCT) president Laura Elizabeth Morales.

“What Proposition 15 does is it incurs a $3 billion debt in the state of Texas. Rather than actually finding a cure for cancer, the finance and oversight cost so much that it’s only a drop in the bucket when we actually get down to it,” Morales said.

“So what we’re talking about here is that we think the private sector can better handle this and that this proposition is poorly written and doesn’t responsibly allocate money.”

The $3 billion in bonds would have to be paid off and the House Research Organization predicts the cost of financing the research funds would amount to $1.6 billion, roughly more than half of the amount dedicated to research.

Early voting for the proposition began on Oct. 22 and will continue through Nov. 2. Election Day for Proposition 15 is on Nov. 6.
